Children Need Preventive Dental Care at an Early Age

Joseph Coupal - Monday, March 26, 2018
Oyster Point Dentistry - Preventative Dental Care in Newport News, VA

Maintaining good oral hygiene gives children a better chance of having good overall health. Poor oral health can hinder the child’s ability to take in the right nutrition, speak properly, and keep a positive self-image. Many children entering kindergarten today already have cavities in their teeth. The reason behind this is that they simply failed to brush and floss their teeth daily. Cavities in infants, toddlers, and children prevent the development of a healthy smile which is why it is important to prioritize good dental care habits for children. These early preventive dental care habits ensure children and parents are on the right track toward good oral health.

It is very important to educate both parents and children on practicing good oral hygiene habits. Proper tooth brushing and flossing are major preventive dental care techniques for maintaining a healthy mouth. Pediatric dentists recommend that children should come in for regular check-ups every six months or as often as doctors recommend. However, children who are at high risk of tooth decay may need to visit their dentists more often. Our professional staff at Oyster Point Dentistry in Hampton, VA provides early treatment for infant cavities, tooth decay, and abnormal growth of children’s teeth such as uneven spacing, misalignment, and ectopic eruption.

Preventing cavities and plaque build-up in children is easier, less painful, and is less costly than treating dental problems after they’ve fully developed. Your child’s dental health greatly affects their overall health, so don’t take it for granted.

Dental Bridges Replace a Missing Tooth by Bridging The Gap

Joseph Coupal - Monday, March 12, 2018
Oyster Point Dentistry - Britesmile Teeth Whitening System - In Office Whitening Treatment, Hampton, VA

A dental bridge is a fixed dental prosthesis used to replace one or several teeth by permanently joining an artificial tooth to adjacent teeth or to dental implants. Replacing and restoring missing teeth with dental bridges is ideal for many patients who are more comfortable with fixed restoration rather than with a removable one.

Dental bridges in Virginia Beach, VA are permanent by cementing the anchor crowns to the abutment teeth so there’s no need for periodic removal. Because of this advantage, most patients prefer bridges over removable dentures. Dental bridges are used to protect and reshape the affected teeth and prevent complications that may arise because of tooth loss. They also provide excellent chewing comfort because they facilitate proper alignment when chewing of food by distributing the forces in your bite properly. When well-executed and properly maintained, bridges ensure comfort and aesthetics so your smile will look as brilliant as it was before.

Often, dental implants tend to replace dental bridges. However, traditional dental bridges which are supported by natural teeth are still popular and widespread. These bridges give a natural look and feel, fit and function like natural teeth.

For more details on dental bridges, contact Oyster Point Dentistry.

Invisible Dental Fillings are Durable and More Aesthetically Pleasing than Other Fillings

Joseph Coupal - Monday, February 26, 2018
Oyster Point Dentistry Invisible Dental Filling in Newport News, VA

The development of stronger and more aesthetically pleasing dental filling material for restorations has been a major focus in dentistry for many years. Dental fillings are formulated to restore teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay. Nowadays, most dentists use composite filling material to repair damaged teeth because it matches the natural color and texture of the surrounding teeth, making them virtually invisible. Invisible dental fillings are both durable and aesthetically pleasing which is why they are the most popular for treating chipped or cracked teeth. There are no health risks associated with invisible dental fillings making this choice a safe alternative solution to improve the health of the teeth.

The newest dental fillings are made of composite material that is bonded to the tooth structure enhancing the strength of the tooth. In fact, silver fillings actually weaken the tooth because the metal has a wider expansion and contraction range which can lead to cracks in the fillings over time. This makes the tooth more prone to breakage. Moreover, dentists do not have to remove as much of the natural tooth structure when preparing for the composite fillings, but in silver fillings the hole required for prepping the tooth is relatively larger.

Invisible dental fillings in Yorktown, VA provides patients with white or tooth-colored fillings that gives them a more pleasing, silver-free smile. Along with repairing damaged teeth, invisible dental fillings are also used for cosmetic improvements such as reshaping teeth and changing the color of teeth to match existing teeth. Regular visits to your dentist is important so that you can have the right treatment and you can achieve the best dental care.

Importance of Preventative Dental Care on Children’s Baby Teeth

Joseph Coupal - Monday, January 15, 2018
Oyster Point Dentistry - Preventative Dental Care in Newport News, VA

Children’s permanent teeth come in around age 7 or 8. As a result, many parents tend to delay preventative dental care dentist appointments until this time, and too often by then kids are already complaining of toothache or suffering from tooth decay. Although kids have baby teeth which will fall out at a young age, parents should take care because these temporary teeth serve as a guide track for the emerging adult teeth. Your child’s permanent teeth can end up crooked, overlapping, and unattractive.

A minor cavity in baby teeth can quickly develop into larger cavities because of the thin enamel. Cavities are signs of infection and always come with gum swelling and pain. If left untreated, infection can spread to blood circulation causing illnesses.

It is advisable to start caring for your child’s teeth as soon as solid foods are introduced, usually as early as 6 months. Also, do not put babies to sleep with bottles in their mouth and you should clean their teeth with a wet cloth every after feeding. When they reach 1 year you can start using a soft-bristled brush to remove excess food particles. Limit sugary foods and drinks since most bacteria that thrives in the mouth love a sweet environment. It is also necessary to bring your child to the dentist in Newport News, VA at least twice a year for dental check-us.

Don’t neglect your child’s dental health. Their temporary teeth set the path for sprouting adult teeth helping them emerge straight and healthy. Moreover, your child’s dental wellness impacts their nutrition, speech development, appearance and self-esteem. For more dental health care tips for baby teeth, call Oyster Point Dentistry.

Sleep Apnea Tied to Increase Risk for Type II Diabetes

Joseph Coupal - Monday, January 08, 2018
Oyster Point Dentistry Sleep Apnea Treatment in Newport News, VA

Snoring is a common condition and people are less concerned with it unless it becomes really disruptive to their partners. They only tend to seek sleep apnea treatment when complications such as Diabetes start to manifest.

Gasping for air during a sleep apnea episode tips off your sympathetic nervous system to set your body in fight-or-flight mode. This stimulates the release of stress hormones that can elevate the blood sugar levels. Moreover, due to repetitive disruptive sleep at night people become sleepy and less active during the day. Your system perceives that you require more energy and prompts your subconscious to overeat. The increase in glucose intake and slow metabolism related to less activity, increases your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Treating your sleep apnea problem can help you control your blood glucose levels. Dentists in Newport News, VA can address this problem effectively with custom fit dental devices. Contact Oyster Point Dentistry to learn more!

Invisible Dental Fillings Blend Naturally with Existing Teeth

Joseph Coupal - Monday, January 01, 2018
Oyster Point Dentistry Invisible Dental Filling in Newport News, VA

A smile is the nicest thing you can wear. When you have a healthy and flawless set of teeth, it boosts self-confidence and can enhance your appearance. Dental care is essential for preventing your teeth from decaying. However, there are some instances that are not under your control, cavities may still penetrate and can damage your teeth. Dental fillings are often the best solution for restoring your teeth and for preventing further damage that can be caused by tooth decay.

In years past, dentists have used different materials to fill cavities such as amalgam, silver, ceramic or porcelain and gold. One disadvantage of using these materials is that they are visible. This is why today dentists offer and provide invisible dental fillings. By precisely matching tooth-colored composite fillings with the natural color of your teeth, these fillings are virtually invisible and can give patients a more pleasing, attractive smile.

Invisible dental fillings in Newport News, VA offer restorative and cosmetic dentistry that is aesthetically appealing. These invisible dental fillings are preferred by most patients because they blend naturally to the color of your existing teeth. They are durable and the composite materials used for dental fillings can strengthen your teeth. For this reason, you don’t have to worry about not being able to wear a beautiful smile anywhere.

Give A Free Holiday Gift in 30-Seconds or Less

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, December 20, 2017
Oyster Point Dentistry - Holiday Gift in Newport News, VA

If a friend, relative, or valued service provider has a website, give them the gift of a business Facebook “like” this Holiday season. This act is free and will literally take you 30 seconds or less. By doing so, you help your friend or relative further establish business credibility and trust from an online standpoint.

Why do this? The reason is simple. Facebook “likes” is something that business owners can refer to promote their business popularity and interaction with their clients. It is also a widely accepted conclusion that Facebook “likes” play some role in how a website converts visitors into customers.

So if you know anyone with a website and wish them well in business, take 30-seconds and “like” their business Facebook page. Look for the Facebook logo usually located at the top or bottom of the website’s home page. Then shoot them a quick note saying, “Happy Holidays. I recently “liked” your business Facebook page and wish you continued business success in 2018 and beyond”. It would be a kind gesture and one that cost you nothing other than 30 seconds of your time.

To all our regular readers of this blog, we wish you all Happy Holidays and only the best for 2018 and beyond.

Preventative Dental Care Can Combat Heart Diseases

Joseph Coupal - Monday, December 18, 2017
Oyster Point Dentistry - dentist in Newport News, VA

Did you ever wonder why some drugs for hypertension are activated by putting them under your tongue to dissolve instead of swallowing with water? It's because your mouth and gums are made up of thin tissues which has an abundant blood supply. It can easily absorb the drug and delivers it directly to the bloodstream quickly taking effect to lower blood pressure. Bacteria thrives in your mouth and multiplies. These bacteria can penetrate your mouth lining and penetrate your blood stream, spreading infection to your entire body, particularly affecting the heart.

A simple cavity can be the bacteria's portal of entry to the blood stream. And since blood is moved through the heart; the bacteria can live there and proliferate, eventually causing infection and damage. Thus, preventative dental care shouldn't be taken for granted.

Maintaining oral hygiene wards off dental caries and prevents bacteria from accumulating in your mouth. Being mindful with your diet is another way to avoid cavities because sugar-rich foods also promotes bacteria growth. A regular visit to the dentist in Newport News, VA is advisable to keep your oral health in check.

If you are having issues with dental health or just want a check-up, don't hesitate to contact Oyster Point Dentistry, immediately. Early treatment of dental problems is advised to prevent further damage to your teeth to fend off more severe diseases.

Dental Health Care Tips for the Holidays

Joseph Coupal - Friday, December 08, 2017
Oyster Point Dentistry Invisalign dentist in Newport News, VA

Tis' the season of ceaseless feasting. Constant eating of hard candy candies, sweet pastries, cocktails and other alcoholic beverages pose threats to teeth. But at this time of year, it is hard to get away from these holiday treats. So rather than giving yourself a hard time trying to avoid these delicacies, follow these preventative dental care tips so you can indulge in your favorite holiday treats without compromising your teeth.

Moderation is the Key - Depriving yourself from eating may cause you to overeat later on. So instead of getting a whole slice of your favorite pie or cake, limit yourself with a quarter or half. Limit your alcohol intake as well because it can dry up your mouth creating a favorable environment for bacteria to breed and multiply.

Eat your full meal first - Delay your visit to the dessert table. Work your way to the main course. Fill your plate with calcium-rich food like cheese, salads, whole grains and lean meat that can strengthen your teeth. That way you’ll be full before dessert. It is actually advisable to consume sugar-filled food with meals because this helps with saliva production. This helps eliminate acid that is generated by bacteria that causes cavities.

Don’t skip your oral hygiene habits - Your daily preventative dental care which includes teeth brushing and flossing is your everyday protection from cavities and tooth decay. Meanwhile, visiting a dentist in Newport News, VA for examination and cleaning can help maintain your dental health.

Don’t take your dental health for granted this season. Cavities don’t take a break even on holidays, instead they take advantage of it. For more dental health care tips, contact Oyster Point Dentistry.

Invisalign clear aligners are making noise in the world of orthodontics. This newer technique appeals to many fans of conventional braces due to the the ease of use and improved aesthetics they offer with the same effect in alignment as the metallic and other counterparts. Oyster Point Dentistry - Happy Thanksgiving

It’s Thanksgiving week and a time each year when we reflect upon the blessing within our lives. Today our warmest Thanksgiving wishes go out to all of you, our clients, friends, and neighbors. Along with this note of thanks to you, this week we offer a special Thanksgiving “shout-out” to one of the more unsung Thanksgiving heroes, Sarah Hale. Historians credit Sara Hale as the originator of the Thanksgiving federal holiday.

Sara Hale undertook a 17-year letter writing campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday observed in all states. Before Hale, Thanksgiving was not a fixed holiday but rather an informal tradition. Presidents would select a day and make it known that it would be a day of thanksgiving and community. Hale lobbied five separate presidents for a set date until finally her request was granted by president Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln congratulated her tenacity and immortalized the holiday as part of American culture.

So thanks, Sara, for your 17 years of letter writing, for securing our day of Thanks on Thursday, and for your part in creating one of the most warm and celebrated day within our American culture!

Dental Crowns and Bridges Via FSA and HSA Savings

Darren Kincaid - Friday, November 10, 2017

Many of you are calling us here at Oyster Point Dentistry (serving Hampton and Newport News Virginia) to schedule end of year cleanings and other dental treatments (such as dental implants) that for any number of reasons that you've delayed until now.  This is also the time of year when we increase the volume of dental crown and dental bridge work as corrective dental procedures are the perfect use for end of year flexible savings account and health savings account dollars that expire at year's end.

What are crowns and bridges?

A crown is a hard-wearing dental cap which restores a tooth’s shape and protects your own natural tooth below. The ceramic material of a crown strengthens your tooth and gives your smile a beautifully natural look.

Dental bridges replace a missing tooth or teeth by placing a ceramic tooth in a gap that is held in place by crowns on the surrounding teeth. Crowns and bridges are an excellent alternative to dentures that give you a strong and natural looking smile.

Crowns and bridges can be used to:

  • Replace missing teeth and strengthen remaining teeth
  • Dramatically improve the appearance of decayed, worn and broken teeth

Why seek dental crown or bridge work?

If you have lost or are missing a tooth and have a large gap, then your jaw will continue to shrink and weaken until the gap is filled. Bridgework (also known as fixed bridges) is an excellent non-removable way to stop this continuing damage and give you the closest result to having your own natural teeth back.

The benefits of having crowns and bridges by Oyster Point Dentisty here in Newport News:

  • Gives you a long lasting, reliable solution compared to dentures
  • More affordable than dental implants
  • You can chew steak again!

It is our policy to give you open and honest advice on all your options, alternatives and the associated costs, allowing you to make the most informed decision. We will then continue to work with you to ensure you enjoy the maximum amount of time from your treatment. Call us today to learn more!

Dental Implants - The #1 Alternative to Traditional Dentures

Darren Kincaid - Friday, November 03, 2017

To many, the subject of dental implants remain a mystery and cause of concern. However, for over thirty years now dental surgeons increasingly use implants in lieu of traditional dentures as the substitute for replacing natural teeth. So as a service to our patients and neighbors here in Hampton and Newport News Virginia, we here at Oyster Point Dentistry want to discuss the subject of dental implants and how they might be a good dental treatment option for you.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that integrates with your jaw to replace the lost tooth root. A porcelain crowned tooth is then attached to the top of the implant to complete your smile.

The dental implant procedure has been around for over 30 years and gives you the closest result to having your own natural teeth back.

Dental implants can be used to:

  • Replace a single missing tooth with a single dental implant
  • Replace a row of missing teeth secured over multiple dental implants
  • Replace a whole mouthful of teeth if necessary.

Why have dental implants?

If you have lost or are missing a tooth and have a large gap, then your jaw will continue to shrink and weaken until the gap is filled. Dental implants are the best way to stop this continuing damage and give you the closest result to having your own natural teeth back.

A dental implant is also a great alternative for denture wearers that find dentures uncomfortable, sore or difficult to chew and speak with. There are plenty of reasons beyond those listed here for you to consider dental implants to replace lost or severely damaged teethCall us today to learn more!

Newborn Dental Health Starts in Pregnancy

Darren Kincaid - Saturday, October 21, 2017

Here at Oyster Point Dentistry (Newport News, VA) we consider ourselves to be a family dental clinic. We’re proud of the fact that we serve countless multi-generational families and that we’ve grown and matured along with the families that we’ve faithfully served over the years. Today, we’d like to briefly discuss the earliest stage of dental care: Pre-Pregnancy dentalplanning.

During pregnancy, you are at greater risk of certain dental problems, the most common of these is periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. Because of the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, your immune system becomes hypersensitive to the bacteria in dental plaque. So when you have a problem, it’s likely to develop and deteriorate at a much greater rate than it would at any other time.

So if you are planning a pregnancy, or have just found out you are pregnant it is wise to get your gums checked out to ensure there are no existing problems already, because periodontal disease can really accelerate throughout a pregnancy.

The other thing that’s important to know is that if you do develop gum disease during your pregnancy it can affect your baby because bacteria can be transmitted into your amniotic fluid. Researchers have found periodontal pathogens in amniotic fluid and placentas, which can lead to a greater risk of low birth weight for the baby.

When the baby is born DNA testing has shown that 95% of the bacteria actually comes from mother. This means that if you have any of those nasty bacteria that can cause infection, be it gum disease, tooth cavities or any other form of infection in the mouth, then you’ve got a very high chance of passing them on to your baby.

OK, so just some thoughts here and certainly no need to panic.  The big takeaway, is simply to continue normal dental hygiene habits and to reach out to your dentist if you are (OR are considering getting pregnant).  Just like your pediatric medical doctor, your loving dental professionals here at Oyster Point Dentistry can offer you a wealth of advice and comfort about caring for you future family. Here's a question we get often asked at Oyster Point Dentistry, our Hampton and Newport news Virginia dental clinic.  What are dental veneers and how do they work? Well, let's discuss them.

Veneers are a purely cosmetic dental procedure and can be somewhat compared to false fingernails.  Dental veneers fit over your tooth to improve their appearance. They are perfect if you have:

Dental Root Canals - Fear Not The Pains of Yesterday

Darren Kincaid - Friday, September 29, 2017

There remains a lot of mystery and fear out there about the common dental procedure known as "root canal". What is a root canal and why are they necessary?

Root canal’ is a term for a dental operation where the infected pulp of a tooth is cleaned out, the space disinfected and then filled and sealed. A diseased or infected tooth nerve can be very painful for some people or if it is in its early stages it may not be causing pain just yet.

Root canal symptoms – what are they and why might I need a root canal treatment?

The reason we do root canal treatments here in Newport News and Hampton Virginia is to save a tooth that has a diseased or infected nerve. Root canals are an alternative to tooth extraction. We can tell that the nerve in the tooth is dying because of the symptoms of:

  • Sensitive teeth – particularly sensitivity between hot and cold temperatures
  • Sore or painful tooth to bite on
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness of the surrounding gum
  • X-Rays: after time the disease in the tooth will spread to the jawbone and the X-Ray will reveal where the jawbone has been eaten away.

Are root canal procedures painful? In the past root canal treatments have had the reputation for being terribly painful and troublesome. That is not so much the case these days – the methods that we have to treat the infected nerves in the tooth are far more predictable. The treatment should really be no more uncomfortable than when you have a filling – which we are able to do with a minimum of pain.

The most pain is felt during a root canal treatment when the nerve is in the process of dying, as sometimes the anaesthetic won’t work properly. We encourage people to call us before this stage, when they first have symptoms of tooth or gum pain.

What is the process for a root canal? Step one: get rid of the infection. Anytime there is an infection anywhere in the body, there is need for immediate treatment.  Dental infection is no different as infections that go untreated can cause the body to go septic and can become life threatening situations.  The first half of the treatment focuses primarily on addressing the infection. So we will numb the tooth, remove the infected tissue, then we clean the tooth out and dress the tooth with an antiseptic material. We will then review the state of the tooth in a couple of weeks to check the healing process. If it all looks good then we seal the root up.

Step two: strengthen the tooth. The second half of a root canal treatment is all about strengthening the tooth. The major reason people loose teeth once they have had root canal treatments are that the teeth fracture. Research advises that teeth that have undergone root canal treatment is that we then need to strengthen that tooth by putting a crown in the tooth rather than a filling – a tooth which has been root treated then restored with a filling may not be strong enough to resist fracture.

This two-step process means that a long lasting root canal treatment can be expensive but it really is the only option to save a tooth. If there is sufficient tooth left and the root canal is done well then it is a very reliable procedure.

So if you are suffering dental pain and even remotely suspect you might have a dental infection, please contact your Hampton or Newport News dentist immediately. The situation could be more serious than you think.

Busting Dental Myths on Brushing and Bleaching Teeth - Virginia Beach, VA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, July 25, 2017

When it comes to dental health in Virginia Beach, VA, having false information can be detrimental. It is not surprising that we have made up several dental myths over the years to pacify our dental problems.

What is really not good about these is we often choose to believe they are true instead of dealing with our issues with dentists particularly in dental care and dental treatments. Let us bust some common dental myths on brushing and bleaching your teeth.

Tooth Brushing worsens Gum Bleeding

When your gums bleed, it is a sign that food particles and plaque have accumulated along the gum line which caused the gums to be inflamed if not irritated. But either should not stop you from brushing them to remove the gunk out rather than leaving your gums until they heal; they won't. The key is to brush gently and do dental preventative care routines regularly. However, it is recommended to only brush your teeth twice or thrice a day so as not to damage the gums, especially when you brush too hard. The same goes with flossing.

Bleaching Rather Weakens Teeth

Luckily there is a wide range of options of whitening products from gels to pastes to strips to have whiter teeth. There are also available teeth-whitening treatments in Virginia Beach, VA to achieve better looking teeth faster. However, a few individuals suffering from yellow or stained teeth are afraid to use bleaching products as they believe these are harmful. But to bust that myth, bleaching products are generally harmless as they only target and therefore affect the color of your teeth. We cannot blame them to be threatened by the color change. Sometimes bleaching is overdone thereby removing too much of the teeth's natural pigmentation. This will result to a translucent appearance of the teeth and temporary side effects such as irritated gums which scare most people.

Check out more myth-busting information from Oyster Point Dentistry.

Morning Headaches? Call Your Dentist

Joseph Coupal - Saturday, July 15, 2017

Regular headaches may be a sign of dental problems. Are you waking up with headache pain, or pain in your neck and shoulders? If so, you should make an appointment with your dentist. These particular aches and pains could be a result of problems with your teeth and mouth. These are common symptoms of TMJ or temporomandibular joint disorder. Basically this is a condition that means that your jaws don’t align properly. Because your jaw is misaligned the jaw is stressed, which puts pressure on your nerves and muscles. This can result in morning headaches, migraines or facial and neck pain.

Not everyone with TMJ disorder shows symptoms, headaches or pain. TMJ can also lead to broken teeth, broken fillings, loose teeth and toothaches. If you do have any of these TMJ symptoms, they won’t get better without professional help.

To ease TMJ pain, rest the jaw eating soft foods, avoiding chewing gum and hard candies. There are also jaw exercises to stretch the jaw joints and relieve stress. For most people, the most effective treatment is a custom dental splint that fits over your upper and lower teeth. This reduces damage to your teeth and jaw from repeated clenching of the jaw or teeth grinding.

There are other options for treating TMJ if the above treatment has not worked for you. The temporomandibular joints can be flushed out, or an injection of cortisone can help relieve inflammation and pain. Surgery is also sometimes necessary. Contact Oyster Point Dental for the right solution for TMJ treatment.

Porcelain Dental Veneers Protect and Provide a Natural Tooth Appearance - Newport News, VA

Joseph Coupal - Saturday, July 08, 2017

Dental Veneers (professionally provided at Oyster Point Dentistry, Newport News, VA are known to be a more aesthetic alternative to bonding. They are the most non-invasive and thus the most conservative approach to change the shade and shape of a tooth or more. Either a thin shell of porcelain or plastic is used to cover the front and the top of a tooth and provide a natural tooth appearance.

Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant and are well tolerated by gum tissues. That is why a porcelain dental veneer is one of the most sought after cosmetic dental treatments in Newport News and across America as a whole. They are generally quick and painless to apply on the surface of the teeth to cover up any imperfection, thereby instantly improving their structure and appearance once the treatment is done. There may be just some slight sensitivity and discomfort that patients may feel at the start but these are all definitely worth it and will soon be gone as you get used to your new dental veneers.

Dental Veneers have been a popular dental treatment because they can transform dull-looking teeth to sparkly white teeth in just a few visits to the dentist. This dental treatment is best used if you have spaces in between teeth to close, small or misshapen teeth to lengthen, or stained teeth to whiten. Veneers also provide the needed protection for teeth that are beginning to wear and literally restore them to their original appearance.

If you are interested in getting porcelain dental veneers, consult with a dentist at Oyster Point Dentistry.

With Invisalign You Don’t Have to Hide Your Smile

Joseph Coupal - Saturday, July 01, 2017

Invisalign braces are a clear alternative to braces. With both teens and adults, Invisalign has grown in popularity because they are essentially invisible while they straighten teeth. As effective as conventional braces, Invisalign are clear plastic aligners that are removable. Because they are removable, they can be taken out for eating or when brushing and flossing making dental care easier and more effective than traditional braces.

Too many teens lose confidence with- or are embarrassed by- metal braces and too many adults forgo straightening their teeth with traditional braces because of the way the metal wires and brackets look.

As the popularity and awareness of Invisalign increases, more patients are deciding to take better care of their teeth through these clear braces. Crooked teeth can lead to other dental health issues, so providing options to traditional braces is important to overall oral health.

A lot of people want to avoid getting braces but with Invisalign patients don't have to hide their smile while straightening their teeth.

Often, Invisalign can straighten teeth in a shorter amount of time, and in less dental visits than regular braces. With Invisalign, patients are given a series of clear aligners that are changed every two weeks until the teeth have straightened.

For more information on Invisalign, or to see if you are a candidate, contact Oyster Point Dentistry.

Invisible Dental Fillings – Cosmetic Dentistry Technique that Beautifully and Effectively Masks Dental Flaws - Hampton, VA

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, June 15, 2017

Metal amalgams are widely used to restore damaged teeth. Now, however, the traditional use of amalgams is giving way to the invisible dental fillings made of porcelain or composite resin.

The latest invisible dental fillings in Hampton, VA are virtually invisible because they are custom-designed to match the color of your remaining natural teeth. Unlike the traditional dental filling, they are metal-free. They require only a minimal preparation which adds to the reasons why more and more patients who formerly have amalgam fillings are now undergoing this treatment to have invisible dental fillings that are as beautiful as they are durable.

These invisible dental fillings promise long lasting effects. They do not darken over time unlike the metal amalgams so you can continue experiencing their unmatched benefits for a longer time. Aside from the fact that the material used in this dental treatment quickly bonds to the tooth structure, their color-matching effect makes them more of an ideal alternative to treat broken, chipped, or decayed teeth. This cosmetic dentistry technique is also a great choice for restoring worn out teeth that are found in front or other visible areas so you can smile metal-free even when the invisible dental fillings are bonded to your teeth.

Regular Dental Visits Make Will Save You Time Money and Avoid Pain - Newport News, VA

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, June 01, 2017

While your teeth and gums do their respective duties, they are exposed to different kinds of cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. Plaque is always forming on your teeth which is why it is imperative that you never skip brushing and flossing. But these are not the only preventative dental care measures you must do to keep you from experiencing tooth decay, gum disease, and dental and financial pain.

Dental check-up and cleaning are two parts of regular dental visits. Your dentist will conduct a dental examination to check for cavities as well as plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. The check-up should also examine your gums, tongue, and throat to look for any swelling or other signs of trouble in your oral and dental health. During dental check-ups, your dentist will catch problems early on so dental treatments in Newport News, VA can be provided immediately; the earlier the diagnosis, the quicker the treatment, the lesser the expense.

Unlike plaque, you cannot remove tartar with regular brushing and flossing at home which is why you need to see your dentist at least twice a year for it. Your teeth will be scaled especially in between your teeth and polished on their surface. If needed, a fluoride paste may also be applied to strengthen your teeth. Getting your teeth cleaned on your regular visit to the clinic will make you spend your time and money wisely.

If you are interested in finding out more about the benefits of making regular visits to your dentist, contact Oyster Point Dentistry.

In-Office Whitening Treatment with BriteSmile – The Best Way to the Whitest Smile - Yorktown, VA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 30, 2017

The BriteSmile teeth whitening system has earned the reputation as the best way to the whitest smile thus making it the most popular cosmetic treatment used by Yorktown dentists today. This advanced whitening system works wonders on anyone who aim to move on from stained or discolored teeth.

Owing to today's lifestyle, tooth discoloration is common today. While we may not be able to distance ourselves from heavily colored foods that stain teeth, an in-office whitening treatment for those of you in Newport News and Yorktown, VA is now immediately available as a path to healthy pearly whites. With just a visit to a dental clinic, a bright smile can be achieved without any kind of inconvenience to the patient getting the treatment.

The hydrogen peroxide-based gel which acts as whitener is safe to use and produces amazing results. The dentist protects the other areas in your mouth such as your lips and gums so only the gelled teeth that are to be whitened are the only ones left exposed to the glass plasma light. This new professional teeth whitening system applies heat to the gel using the plasma light to accelerate the effect. The entire dental treatment takes around an hour to finish and during this time, the gel may be applied more than once depending on the current condition of your stained teeth.

Dental Bridges Replace Missing Teeth and Prevent Shifting of Remaining Teeth - Newport News, VA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 16, 2017

There are now several affordable dental treatments to replace missing teeth. Two common treatments involve dental implants or the use of dental bridges.

Dental bridges in Newport News, VA typically require shaping of the teeth adjacent to a missing tooth. Dental crowns are then placed on the shaped teeth in which the artificial tooth is attached and will act as the replacement. In order for these replacement teeth to last for years, you must exercise a proper dental hygiene and visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleaning.

It cannot be denied that a missing tooth or more can adversely affect the appearance of your smile and the functionality of your dental arches. If not given immediate treatment, there will be a shifting of the teeth which will not only result in a change in occlusion or bite but also will expose you to certain risks such as temporomandibular joint disorder and periodontal disease. So before missing teeth can wreak havoc to your dental health and require a more costly dental treatment, you should take time to visit your dentist and find out what you can do about your case.

For more details, contact Oyster Point Dentistry.

Oral Sedation Process Keeps Children from Fearing Dental Treatments - Smithfield, VA

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, April 27, 2017

It is all too uncommon for children to fear dental treatment so severely that it prohibits the dentist to perform even the most basic treatment services to include simple cleaning. Some of them thrash in the chair and some lock their jaws shutting the treatment session completely down. So in the efforts of maximizing the chance that your child gets the dental care they need, today's dentist's use a proven safe and effective oral sedation process that makes dental treatments be conducted easier to children.

When dental sedation techniques are used, your child will feel relaxed and is conscious enough to respond to verbal command as well as physical stimulation. Also, your child will maintain its ability to open airway independently and continuously. Therefore, this oral sedation is safe for kids, not to mention that this is only conducted by a qualified pediatric sedation dentist.

Dental sedation in Smithfield, VA helps children undergo a dental treatment who otherwise would not receive it. It allows them to relax and let the dentist restore their mouth to a healthy state. Parents should accompany their children who have extensive dental needs, have traumatic past dental experiences, or have very strong gag reflexes when seeing a dentist and consult about the available dental sedation techniques.

To find out more about oral sedation, contact Smithfield Dental.

Break Bad Dental Habits - Newport News, VA

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, April 19, 2017

Did you know that a lot of little things you do, or that you forget to do, daily affect your dental health? They also could be classified as bad oral habits? These include not brushing or flossing enough, eating too many sweets too often, or even using your teeth to open a bag of chips.

Bad oral habits are hard to break, but they can be stopped by the following tips:

Floss at least once a day
. It helps remove bits of food and dental plaque in places your toothbrush can't find, helping to keep your gums healthy.

Brush at least twice a day. If brushing is not an option, chew sugarless gum (make sure it's sugarless!) for 20 minutes after a meal or snack. This helps prevent tooth decay.

Clean your tongue. Regularly cleaning your tongue with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper helps remove the bacteria that causes bad breath.

Replace your toothbrush regularly. Replacing your tooth brush ever 3-4 months is a good idea. Bristles in your toothbrush that are bent and broken don't do a good job cleaning your teeth.

Eat a balanced diet. Snacking on sweets without brushing increases the acid in your mouth… and the likelihood of tooth decay. Munch on vegetables and fruit instead.

Regular Dental Visits. Your dentist is trained to do damage control in your mouth before it's too late. You should visit the dentist regularly -- every six months.

Adding these dental habits to your list one at a time is a good start to kick those bad oral habits. By doing a little self-check on your daily dental care habits, you can be on your way to making sure your teeth, your mouth's health and your overall health are at their best.

For more information, or to make a dentist appointment, contact Oyster Point Dentistry.

Cavities: Frequently Asked Questions – Newport News, VA

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, April 05, 2017

Dental cavities and tooth decay is increasing among children and among seniors. In fact, ost of us have had at least one cavity. While sugary food doesn’t help, cavities are usually caused by not brushing your teeth enough, by not flossing enough and from skipping regular dentist appointments.  is not enough brushing your teeth, flossing and dentist appointments.

The following are some cavity FAQs:

Q: Is there a difference between tooth decay and a cavity?

A: Tooth decay and cavities are actually not the same thing. Tooth decay is the gradual process in which bacteria in the mouth produces acids that destroy the surfaces of teeth. Over time, tooth decay can erode the tooth enamel causing a hole, or cavity.

Q: How do I know if I have a cavity?

A: During a regular dental exam, one of the first things your dentist will look for are dental  cavities. Dental X-rays can help your dentist diagnose whether you have cavities and how extensive those cavities are. Sometimes a dental cavity is visible to the naked eye. Visible black holes or spots in your teeth, or a toothache or sensitivity to hot or cold food and drinks could be signs of cavities.

Q: How are dental cavities treated?

A: Treatment for cavities depends on the size and the degree of damage to your tooth. Although many cavities are treated with silver fillings or invisible fillings, onlays may be necessary to treat large cavities that affect the cusp of the tooth. Cavities affecting the areas in between the cusps can be treated with inlays. Dental crowns are also used in some cases to protect a tooth from further damage. In children dental sealants can be applied to prevent against cavities.

Do you have questions about cavities or dental treatment? Contact Oyster Point Dental.

  • Restore the ability to properly chew and speak
  • Maintain the shape of your face
  • Distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth
  • Prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position

If you have a missing tooth as a result of genetics or an accident, you understand the importance of having a smile that you are confident in. The Most Paranoid Dental Patient Ever

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, March 14, 2017
Oyster Point Dentistry - Scared Dental Patient

Every workplace experiences head shaking humor at one time or another. One of the most intense experiences in our industry is dealing with patients who suffer true paranoia about sitting in a dentist’s chair. Here at Oyster Point Dentistry we specialize in settling those with dental treatment anxiety. Our treatment services range from pre-treatment counselling (relaxation methodologies and pre-treatment medication) to teaming here on site with medical doctors (Board Certified Anesthesiologists) to deliver sedation and total sleep dentistry treatment here in Newport News Virginia.

What drove us to write today regarding dental patient paranoia? We read the story recently (in one of our dental journals) about a loving husband who no longer could stand idly by why his beloved wife suffered from chronic tooth and gum disease. For her own health and wellbeing, he scheduled her for dental treatment, scheduled annual leave for the day of the appointment, and steadily reassured her in the days leading up to the appointment that everything would be OK.

On the morning of the appointment, the wife appeared incensed about being forced to go to the dentist. She did not say a word that morning and remained silent all the way into the dentist’s chair. What those dentists discovered was truly a unique dental case. She had super-glued her teeth together! A long story short here, the treatment involved two phases. First, a staff member went to the local grocer and brought back a bottle of olive oil. In time, the oil broke down the glue’s bond and freed her mouth. Second, they used what we offer, heavy dental sedation to calm her and successfully completed the treatment.

They wouldn’t print it if it wasn’t true. All of this to say, your caring friends here at Oyster Pointe Dentistry (Newport News, Va) know how to get even the most paranoid of patients through their critical dental health care treatments. It’s a half-hour to a grocer from here, so don’t glue your mouth shut. Call us. We have better ideas.

Many people are afraid of going to the dentist, but most will muster the bravery to go in when their teeth start falling out. However, most people are not Angie Barlow of England.

Simple Daily Preventative Dental Care Vs. Pain, Pride, and Money– Newport News, VA

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, March 09, 2017
Oyster Point Dentistry - Dental health measures

Simple daily dental health measures deliver multiple benefits as it pertains to dental pain, your self image, and your wallet. By simply brushing and flossing your teeth daily you will enjoy the benefits of a pain free dental condition while also enjoying the lowest dental care cost possible.

Because we truly care for our patients, our dental care professionals here in Newport News VA routinely remind our patients to never take their dental health for granted. Good dental hygiene is a simple and fast endeavor. Simply brush your teeth after every meal and commit to flossing your teeth at least once a day. Keeping your teeth clean and your breath fresh all the time can keep disease-causing bacteria to enter your body’s system and cause problems up to the cellular level. Your mouth is a passage way to your internal organs so it is important that preventive measures should be done starting from there.

Preventative dental care does not only include brushing and flossing. Twice a year have your teeth cleaned by your dentist. Most do not realize the secondary benefit of those visits when your dentist assesses your entire mouth for new and potentially deadly disease. Like any cancer, cancer of the mouth, if diagnosed early, significantly increases your chance of full recovery.

Preventative Dental Care Tips (Newport News, Va)

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, March 02, 2017
Oyster Point Dentistry - Preventative Dental Care

Believe it or not, our goal here at Oyster Point Dentistry (Newport News, Va) is to only see you twice a year for routine check-ups and cleaning. That means you are dentally happy and healthy. If you're here for any other reason, we of course are here to restore you to full dental health. Our preventative care web page offers good tips. We go a bit farther in this blog post to help educate you further. What follows are ten simple and routine dental hygiene measures you should take:

  1. Brush properly: One of the easiest steps to do to help your teeth keep clean. When brushing your teeth, position the bristles at an angle of 45 degrees near the gum line. Both the gum line and the tooth surface should be in contact with the bristles. Brush the outer surfaces of the teeth using a back-and-forth, up-and-down motion, making sure to be done gently in order to avoid bleeding. To clean the inside surfaces of the teeth and gums, place the bristles at a 45-degree angle again and repeat the back-and-forth, up-and-down motion. Lastly, brush the surfaces of your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove bacteria, which might cause bad breath.
Try to brush at least twice a day to prevent acid buildup from the breakdown of food by bacteria. However, if your work or activities prevent you from doing this, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water after eating to minimize the amount of food that would serve as substrate for the bacteria.
  2. Floss! Flossing removes food particles and other detrimental substances that brush can't. Flossing allows you to reach deep between your teeth where the toothbrush bristles cannot reach or even mouthwash cannot wash away. Floss daily and strive for twice a day.
  3. Avoid Tobacco. This can and will save you from oral cancer and periodontal complication risk. It will save you from the ill-effects of things you use to mask "smoker's breath": candy, coffee, tea, or sugar based breath mints.
  4. Limit Sodas, Coffee and Alcohol. Beverages containing additives such as corn syrup and food dye make pearly white teeth appear dull and discolored. Choose beverages like milk which actually strengthen teeth and build stronger enamel.
  5. Consume Calcium and other Vitamins that are good for the body. You need plenty of calcium for your teeth. It is essential for the teeth as well as your bones. It is better to drink milk, fortified orange juice and to eat yogurt, broccoli, cheese, and other dairy products. You can also take a calcium supplement, taking different doses according to your age and necessity as per prescription. Calcium and Vitamin D are necessary for maintaining the health of gums and teeth. Vitamin B complex is also essential for the protection of gums and teeth from cracking and bleeding. Copper, zinc, iodine, iron and potassium are also required for maintaining healthy dental hygiene.
  6. Visit Your Dentist. As previoulsy stated, you should visit your dentist at least twice a year to have a full hygiene treatment performed. Also at these appointments, a comprehensive exam is taken with x-rays to help detect and prevent future dental treatments from occurring.
  7. Use Mouthwash along side brushing and flossing. Mouthwash is very helpful because they kill bacteria in your mouth. This promotes good breath as well as help maintain strong teeth.
  8. Having a toothache or noticing other dental symptoms. If you are having tooth and jaw pain make an appointment as soon as possible. Your dentist needs to diagnose the underlying cause and correct it before it turns into a greater problem.
  9. Look at the Big Picture. Everyone understands that you should take care of your teeth to avoid toothaches, maintain your looks and keep dental bills at bay. Many people, however, don’t understand how crucial oral health is to our total health picture. Tooth problems can lead to diabetes, heart disease, systemic infections, an inability to eat or speak properly and other maladies – some life-threatening. Crooked or crowded teeth can contribute to gum disease that can eventually lead to tooth loss. Straight teeth are no longer just for looks.
  10. Clean your tongue. Clean the surface of your tongue daily. By using a professional tongue cleaner you remove countless bacteria that otherwise live, particularly on the rougher top surface of your tongue. These can contribute to bad breath (halitosis) and negatively affect your dental health.

Oral Sedation -- Possibly Your Only Option for Non-Cooperative Children – Newport News, VA

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, February 23, 2017
Oyster Point Dentistry - Dental Sedation in Newport News, VA

Dental Sedation in Newport News, VA is intended to lessen the anxiety and discomfort of dental patients but is exceptionally effective for non-cooperative children. Many children suffer from poor dental health because parents simply give up on putting them in the dentist's chair But this is a serious health issue that can result in life-long tooth loss, gum disease, and other risks. To put an end to this, the dental community has thought of other means to make kids feel comfortable with going to a clinic and visiting the dentist.

Dental sedation techniques come in various forms. But there is one that is commonly used especially for children: oral sedation. Unlike general anesthesia that can render a child unconsious, oral sedation will only make the child drowsy or less active which allows the dentist to conduct the dental treatment with more ease and facility. Once the procedure is done, its effect will just desist quickly. This alternative itself is indeed safe, effective, and painless. Additionally, oral sedation does not require the use of needles, which is also one of the many things kids fear. But sometimes sedation is not enough and total sleep dentistry is required to treat the child. This is the process where our dental staff teams with medical doctors (anesthesiologists) to treat the child in an operating-room environment.
